چکیده

In this work, CFD is used to simulate the flow in an existing thermal labyrinth located at the basement of a hospital building. This labyrinth is an underground channel equipped with water tanks to increase the thermal mass and reduce the heating and cooling demand of the building. Thermal energy storage in the water tanks is a complex heat transfer phenomena involving turbulent forced convection, solid conduction and natural convection. The turbulent forced convection happens between the water tank outside surface and the air flow through the labyrinth. The heat is then conducted through the tank wall and induces a slow buoyant flow inside the tank. CFD techniques are used to solve these problems and the results are compared with experimental measurements. A simplified analysis is then developed to find the optimum parameters and working conditions for designing such a system in future buildings.

Energy Consumption and Heat Storage in a Solar Greenhouse: Artificial Neural Network Method

In this study, the performance of a solar greenhouse heating system equipped with a linear parabolic concentrator and a dual-purpose flat plate solar collector‏ was investigated using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method. The heat required for the greenhouse at night hours was supplied by the heat stored in the storage tank by the solar system during the sunshine time and  an auxiliary he...

Crystallization of supercooled spherical nodules in a flow

The general context of this work concerns the latent heat storage (cold storage) by encapsulated spherical nodules of 7.7 cm in diameter containing a Phase Change Material (PCM) and filling a cylindrical tank (about 2500 nodules per m3). During the storage process, a cold heat transfer liquid flows through the tank to crystallize the PCM inside the nodules. The stored energy is released when a ...

Introduction of Air Cushion to Reduce Seismic Demand in Cylindrical Water Storage Tanks

Water storage tanks not designed explicitly for seismic loading could require retrofit. One of the common ways of retrofit include some structural change in the lateral load resisting system that could be expensive and requires the tank to be out of service for relatively long time. This paper introduces a novel method to reduce seismic demand on tank’s wall without structural intervention. Thi...

Optimization of the PCM-integrated solar domestic hot water system under different thermal stratification conditions

Many researchers have investigated how to increase the overall efficiency of solar-driven thermal systems. Several key parameters, such as collector efficiency and storage tank characteristics, may impose some constraints on the annual solar fraction (ASF) of such systems. In this paper, the behaviour of integrating the phase change material (PCM) in SDHW systems is modelled and optimized n...
